Most likely two. Even if you never made a payment to the original lender before the transfer, prepaid interest was almost certainly collected at closing, covering the stub period from your closing date to the end of that month. That interest has to be reported, so you'd typically receive one smaller 1098 from the original lender for that amount, and a second, larger 1098 from the new servicer for the interest you paid them over the rest of the year. This is normal any time a loan is sold or transferred mid-year, which is extremely common in the mortgage market. We've seen it firsthand: a loan moving between servicers partway through the year produced two 1098s that year, then a single 1098 the next year once one servicer held it for all twelve months. At tax time, make sure you've received and added up every 1098 tied to the loan before you file, so you capture the full year of deductible mortgage interest rather than one servicer's slice. If you're expecting one and a second arrives late, wait for it. Watch your mail and your servicer portals in January, and confirm the treatment with your tax preparer.
